The Worst Injuries Are The Ones You Can’t See

I just heard this yesterday; a patient came in to see me for neck pain caused by an accident seven days ago.  I asked him why he waited so long to get help.

He said “I was not bleeding from my head and did not have any broken bones so I thought I was OK.” “It was not until several days later I began to hurt.”

I hear this a lot…there is no visible injury so people want to think they are not hurt.  The problem is you cannot see inside your body to look whiplash related injuries, such as: for torn ligaments, damaged muscles, broken blood vessels, pinched nerves or misaligned bones due to an accident.  These are hidden soft tissue injuries that do not show up immediately.

I explained it this way; If your oil light comes on in your car, indicating your car is low or leaking oil, you are able to drive it for months before your engine gives out.  The first sign that your engine has problems is when it blows up.  Your body acts much the same way.  It takes time but, eventually you will have a major problem.  This happens because of internal soft tissue, nerve and bone injuries you can’t see.

Medical research has proven that an injury and scar tissue can become permanent after only two weeks.   Once the scar tissue sets in it, begins to change the way your body works and over time you will have a blow out at the injury site or elsewhere due to compensation.

Early detection of your injuries is critical in order to have a chance at a full recovery following an accident or injury. It’s very important to see a doctor who has special training and understands these issues.

Don’t let your Whiplash Injury become Permanent!

March 4, 2010

Did you know that about 25-50% of whiplash injuries fail to resolve completely!

Whiplash is one of the most common injures following a fall or accident and up to 50% of whiplash injuries never completely go away.  This means you may always have problems following a whiplash injury if you don’t go to the right doctor.

There are several reasons for this.  First, most people who are in an accident where the car had only minor damage or even no damage assume they are okay and don’t seek any treatment.  We learned that is not true at all, see this video Whiplash, What You Don’t Know May Cost You.”

Many times people don’t realize that certain symptoms such as less focus and concentration and even irritability or mood changes may be caused by an auto related accident. Click on this case study about a child in an accident who had some of the above changes, but none of the classic pains that people associate with whiplash injuries.

Most whiplash injuries occur between 6-12 mph!  Secondly, when people do seek treatment they most often go to a doctor who has not had special training in finding these sometimes hidden injuries.  Lastly, if people do seek treatment they usually see only one type of doctor.  Many times injures required the treatment of multiple doctors or specialist who know how to treat whiplash and communicate with each other.

That is why we founded PICC.  So people have a place to go where the doctors have special personal injury training, know how long and where to treat you, so nothing will be missed or over looked when it comes to your care.  PICC has TEAM of doctors’ who actually master plan your care and focus on getting you better.

Low Speed Whiplash…How fast before your injured?

March 4, 2010
  1. 1.       At what speed of collision do nearly 80% of whiplash injures occur?
    1. a.      10-15 mph
    2. b.      15-30mph
    3. c.       1-5 mph
    4. d.      6-12 mph

Did the answer surprise you? Many people think that the car must have severe damage or the speed of collision must be high for you to have whiplash or injuries following an accident.  The truth is most of whiplash injuries do occur between 6-12 mph…in many instances this speed will not damage your bumper and your air bag will not deploy.  How could you be injured so badly with no damage to your car?  Is has to do with physics.  Einstein proved that energy is never destroyed it only changes forms….so if your car does not get damaged, no bent bumper or metal then where did all the force go?  Into your body.  This energy going into your body causes your head to accelerate (speed up) 2-3 times faster than the rest of your body, resulting in injury, pain and whiplash.  Think of it this way.  If you hold a pen at the end and then move your wrist up and down which end moves further and faster?  The end farthest from your grip, this is why even minor speeds can cause serious injury.   If you have been injured or in an accident it’s critical you see a doctor who understands these issues.   PICC was founded with your needs in mind and our team will ultimately same you time, money and headaches.
